Attic & Wall Insulation Will Stop Heat Loss

Experienced MA RI Insulation Installers - Mass Save Partner

The attic and kneewall areas are often the most poorly insulated and ventilated area of your home's envelope. Insufficient insulation levels in your attic can result in major heat loss and thus, higher energy bills. Furthermore, poor ventilation and air leakage are major contributing factor for ice dams and mold growth. The walls of many homes are also poorly insulated and lead to heat loss, as well.

If you home's roof looks like the picture below after a light snow fall, you need to call RetroFit Insulation for an energy assessement.

Signs of a poorly insulated and ventilated attic area

RetroFit Insulation recommends the use of Cellulose, Fiberglass, or Rockwell insulation in your attic.

Today's building Codes require and R49 or at least 15” of either of these materials. If cost isn't an issue, then Spray Foam (closed or open cell) can be the best choice in certain situations. Attic and wall insulation is part of a complete system to keep your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Types of Insulation

Cellulose Insulation: This is a great product for both attic and wall insulation for existing older homes. It is probably the best performer in the walls and because it can seal up the tiniest seams that allow air leakage and is recommended by all the weatherization programs.

Fiberglass Batts: This is an alternative for attic insulation. It doesn't perform as well as Cellulose, but it can be very effective if the area is air-sealed properly and has 2 layers, one that lies inside the floor cavities and the top layer going the opposite way (across the floor joists). It is very important not to have any air gaps.

Rockwool or Mineral Wool: This product is made from a rock-type material that is clean and has good thermal protection in the attic. People with serious allegies consider Rockwool. It is more expensive than the other two materials mentioned above and is great for sound proofing.

Spray Foam: It is best performing insulation with the highest R-Value and can be used in all situations. The area needs to be down to studs in order to install. Spray Foam is very expensive, but in the right situation it is the best product.
